Google is moving towards round launcher icons beginning with Android 7.1, and it would be nice to at least have the option in Join-

I have no idea! I'm not much of a designer :)
Could be similar to how Google Drive and Calendar do it, just the regular icon over a white circular badge. And it would only appear if the user has Pixel Launcher as default, otherwise it would be unchanged from what it is now.
It would look nicer if it was circular and made use of the entire round space, but I don't have any ideas for how to achieve that.
Any word if this is gonna happen? Join is one of the last apps on my homescreen to not have a circle icon!
I'd be fine if it was just the current logo on a white circle like the Play apps are. But if the guy who made the Join icon could update it to be a more cropped version of the logo that fits in the circle (or something like that), I'd say it could work too. Here's a couple mockups I made:
